Designing your prints is only half the journey—setting up your files correctly is key to making sure your final prints look just the way you envisioned. At CatPrint, we’re all about helping artists, designers, and creatives bring their work to life with high-quality, custom printing. To help you get started, here’s a step-by-step guide for setting up your print files.

Step 1: Choose the Right File Type

We accept PDF, JPEG, TIFF, and PNG file types for printing. While we don’t have a file type preference, if sending a PDF, we recommend flattening your file whenever possible to help preserve layouts and fonts.

Accepted file formats:

  • PDF

  • JPEG

  • PNG

  • TIFF

Step 2: Set the Correct Size and Bleed

Make sure your file matches the final trim size of your product, with bleed added if needed.

  • Bleed area: Add 1/8 inch (0.125") on each side (that’s 0.25” total to both width and height).

    • For example, a 5" x 7" invitation should be set up as 5.25" x 7.25" if it includes bleed.

  • Safe zone: Keep important text and design elements at least 1/4 inch inside the edge of the file to avoid getting cut into or off.

You can download CatPrint’s guide templates here to help make this easier in your design program.

Step 3: Use High-Resolution Images

Make sure all images are created with at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) for the best print quality. Avoid using screenshots—they’ll print pixelated or blurry.

Step 4: Set the Right Color Mode

CatPrint prints in CMYK, not RGB.

  • Design your file in CMYK mode to get the most accurate color output.

  • If your file is in RGB, CatPrint will convert it—but this might cause color shifts, especially with bright neon tones.

We offer free hard copy proofs so you can review the color outcome before approving your full order for printing.

Step 5: Double-Check Your File

Before uploading, do a final review:

  • Is the size correct?

  • Did you include bleed if necessary?

  • Are all images high-res and in CMYK?

  • Are your fonts outlined and layers flattened?

Step 6: Upload to CatPrint

  2. Upload your file(s)

  3. Select your job type

  4. Choose your paper, finishing options, and quantity

  5. Select your free proofing option–an online proof or a hard copy proof
