If you’ve ever started a print order and thought, “I should know what this means… right?” You’re not alone.

Print terminology can feel overwhelming, especially if you don’t work with it every day. That’s why we’re breaking down some of the most common print terms you’ll see when preparing files or placing an order. No design degree required. Print terms made simple starts here! And if you ever get stuck along the way, printing with CatPrint means you always have a real team ready to help every step of the way.

Term

What it is

Details

Bleed

Extra space for trimming

Think of it like: Coloring past the lines so everything still looks perfect after cutting

Bleed is the extra area around the edge of your design that gets trimmed off after printing. It ensures your background colors or images go all the way to the edge with no accidental white borders.

If you’re unsure how to set it up, our Customer Service Team can double-check your file before it goes to print.

Trim Size

The final size of your print

Trim size is the finished size of your piece after it’s been cut down. For example, if you order 5" × 7" invitations, that’s the trim size.

Crop Marks

Guides for cutting

Crop marks are small lines in the corners of your design that show where your piece should be trimmed. They’re useful for processing but won’t appear on your final print.

Not sure whether to include them? Our Customer Service Team can let you know based on your project.

DPI (Dots Per Inch)

Image sharpness

Low DPI = blurry

High DPI = sharp and professional

DPI measures how detailed your images are. For printing, 300 DPI is the sweet spot for crisp, clear results.

CMYK vs. RGB

Color mode

RGB is for screens

CMYK is for printing

Even though you design on a screen in RGB, converting your file to CMYK before printing helps your colors translate more accurately, reducing unexpected color shifts and ensuring the final print looks as close as possible to what you intended.

Proof

A preview before printing

A proof lets you review how your file will print before it goes into production.

CatPrint offers free proofs, so you can catch any issues and feel confident before your order is approved for printing.
