Canva makes it incredibly easy to design invitations, greeting cards, art prints, and stationery, even if you don’t have professional design experience. But preparing your design for professional printing requires a few extra steps to ensure everything prints clearly and correctly.

If you’re planning to print a Canva design with a professional printer like CatPrint, following the steps below will help you export a print-ready file that produces the best possible results.

📏 Start With the Correct Document Size

The first step to creating a print-ready design is setting your Canva document to the final trim size of your printed piece.

Common print sizes include:

  • 5" × 7" invitations

  • 4" × 6" postcards

  • 5.5" × 4.25" folded greeting cards

  • 8" × 10" art prints

When creating a new design in Canva, choose Custom Size and enter the exact dimensions of your finished piece. Starting with the correct size helps ensure your layout stays consistent and prevents scaling issues when your file goes to print.

✂️ Add Bleed to Prevent White Edges

If your design includes color, photos, or patterns that extend to the edge of the page, you’ll need to account for bleed. Bleed is the extra image area beyond the final trim line that ensures your design reaches the edge of the paper after trimming.

To view bleed in Canva:

File → Settings → Show Print Bleed

A dotted line will appear near the edges of your document. Extend any background colors or images past this line so they continue beyond the final cut. This prevents unwanted white borders on your printed piece.

🧷 Keep Important Elements Inside the Safe Area

While bleed extends outward, important elements should stay safely inside the trim line.

Because paper is trimmed in stacks, natural shifting can happen during cutting. To prevent text from being accidentally trimmed, keep important content at least 0.25" away from the edge. This area is often called the safe margin and helps ensure your design prints as intended.

🖼️ Use High-Resolution Images

For sharp, professional printing, images should be 300 DPI (dots per inch). Low-resolution images may appear fine on screen but can look blurry or pixelated when printed.

To improve print quality:

  • Upload the highest resolution images available

  • Avoid enlarging small images too much

  • Check that images appear crisp within your design

High-resolution artwork ensures your printed pieces look clear and detailed, whether you're creating art prints, greeting cards, invitations, or business stationery.

📄 Export Your Design as a PDF Print File

Once your design is complete, export it using Canva’s PDF Print format. This preserves image quality and includes the information printers need to trim your design correctly.

To download your file:

  1. Click Share

  2. Select Download

  3. Choose PDF Print

  4. Enable Crop Marks and Bleed

  5. Enable Flatten PDF

  6. Click Download

This creates a print-ready file from Canva that can be uploaded directly to CatPrint for professional printing.

✅ Double-Check Your File Before Printing

Before uploading your file for printing, take a moment to review your design:

✔ Document size matches the final print size

✔ Backgrounds extend to the bleed line

✔ Text stays within safe margins

✔ Images are high resolution

✔ Export settings are enabled

These quick checks help avoid printing issues and ensure your final product looks exactly as intended.

🎨 Turn Your Canva Design Into a Printed Piece

Canva makes designing simple, but professional printing is what brings those designs to life. Once your file is exported, you can upload your print-ready design to CatPrint and choose from a wide range of premium paper stocks, finishes, and custom sizes to create something truly memorable.

From invitations and greeting cards to art prints and stationery, preparing your Canva files correctly ensures your designs print beautifully and look just as good in hand as they do on screen.

One advantage of printing with CatPrint is the option for free proofing before your full order goes into production. You can request either an online proof, which is a PDF preview sent within one business day, or a free hard-copy proof mailed to you so you can review your design in person.

Hard-copy proofs are especially helpful for checking things like:

  • Color outcome

  • Photo clarity

  • Paper selection

  • Finishing options

  • Overall layout

Once you receive your proof, you can approve it for printing or request adjustments before production begins, helping ensure the final product looks exactly the way you expect.
